The 2008 Speaker of the Year Dinner is scheduled for Saturday 1 November 2008 at the Hotel Ibis.

Competition speaking is a different experience to a club speech where you are judged on your own performance.

In a competition speech you will be expected to deliver a longer and purposeful speech in competition surroundings.

You will be judged in relation to your fellow competitors to find a winner. In a competition only one (or two depending on the level of competition) will be a winner. There will always be a winner even if all speakers were brilliant or all speakers mediocre.

The value of the competition for you is the experience and learning what works for you in a testing speech.

Every year Rostrum coordinates the Speaker of the Year Award where you have the opportunity to compete against other Club Members to win the title of Speaker of the Year.

Club of Excellence Award

The 2007 Club of Excellence Award will be presented at the 2007 Speaker of the Year Awards dinner scheduled for Saturday 17 November 2007 at Citywest Function Centre.  Please mark your diary now!

The Club of Excellence is held annually and Clubs are invited to participate.

This award is presented to recognise Clubs which have demonstrated they have achieved their objectives in activities, development and programs for the benefit of its members and the wider Rostrum movement.

Like any competition, the participants gain substantially from the process of preparing their submission, regardless of the outcome.

In collecting information about activities, attendance at Rostrum events and supporting the various Club events, will show the wider benefits of member development efforts. Many Clubs report they are surprised at how many activities members are involved in and find they have a broader and richer experience.

For Clubs which have a designated officer, the task of completing the submission will take approx 30 mins each month to collect and collate the information.

Clubs starting this task in July have almost 4 months to complete the submission forms.

We urge you to start now and look forward to seeing an increase in the number of Clubs participating this year.

What is a tall story?

A Tall Story is not a joke or series of 'one-liners', it is not the stuff of stand-up comedians but is a complete story. A Tall Story is simply a tale that stretches the truth a little or a lot.

The 'one that got away' is the quintessential Tall Story. Australian men and women are excellent story tellers and Tall Stories are very much a part of the Australian character. The shearing shed, the campfire, the loneliness of the bush is where some Aussie tall stories originate. Above all else a Tall Story should be humorous.

Tall Stories Competition Rules

The Rules incorporate Aim, Elegibility, Speech Preparation, Speech Timing, General Contest Procedure and general Judging Criteria.

Click here to visit Club 15's website for a current copy of the competition rules

Tall Stories Adjudication Criteria

The Adjudication scoresheet used by qualified adjudicators is based on the impact on the intellect and impact on the emotion format of Rostrum Western Australia, each 40% of marks with a further powerball humour bonus of up to 20 marks.
